The origins of our company date back to times when Latvia was a part of the former Soviet Union. At that time an influential organisation in Moscow, the capital of the former Soviet Union, made a decision to open an optical fibre factory in one of the three Baltic states as it was considered that the balts have much better manufacturing culture in comparison to other republics which made up the USSR.
In 1983 a separate optical fibre manufacturing unit was established under the auspices of the former Livani glass factory, the oldest industrial site in the town. At that time the optical fibre made by the factory served the Soviet military industry.
The first challenges came along with the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Latvia in 1991. During the first years of independence the glass factory abandoned its optical fibre unit which has lost its market as the USSR collapsed. The facility was on the brink of extinction however it was saved by a group of dedicated employees who decided to turn their sights to innovation being confident this is the right choice.
It can be considered to be the beginning of Z-Light Ltd. which was officially founded in 2004 starting its manufacturing operations in the premises of the former Livani biochemical factory.
The groundwork for the future success story of the company was laid by some 50 professionals with more than 25 years of experience and knowledge in the field of optical fibre.
Shortly after the foundation the company started to develop at a very brisk pace. It received the ISO 9001:2008 certificate on 23 December, 2004 whereas the first optical fibre draw tower was launched already in the end of January, 2005.
